  1. Sycamore and Arabidopsis cells were initially incubated for 5 d at 22°C in their respective NM devoid of Pi in order to stop cell growth. At day 5, incubation was pursued at 22°C and 5°C in the same nutrient media. O2-uptake by Pi-deficient cells was measured after 5 d incubation at 22°C and 6 months incubation at 5°C. In addition, the O2-uptake by cells incubated for 6 months at 5°C was measured at 22°C in standard Pi-supplied media after a 10-min recovery (5°C→22°C). All cells were incubated in the dark. O2-uptake rates measured as indicated in "Material and Methods" are expressed as nmol O2 consumed min-1 g-1 cell FW. Values are means ± SD (n = 5). FCCP, cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone.
