The X axis label indicates whether the first root inoculated (Root A) was the stock root or the inserted root. Root B was inoculated 4 days after Root A and data was collected 21 days after Root B inoculation. The Y axis is average nodule number per root; error bars indicate standard error of the mean. Both comparisons are significant by pair-wise t-test with P < 0.05. N = 6 for the first set of bars and 8 for the second.
