NM (a, b) and AM (c–f) whole root specimens of two soybean cultivars: Nattoukotsubu (a, c, e) and Tachinagaha (b, d, f). Each specimen was cut into 9 rectangular sheets, as shown in e and f. Root colonization by AM hyphae was measured from roots in each rectangular sheet. Numbers in e and f indicate the root colonization in each location. Shaded colors are darkened every 25%
