The effect of averaging local strain measurements around the circumference of the test specimens from 1, 2, 3, or 4 sides. Measuring strain from all sides reduces circumferential variation caused by structural asymmetry of the test specimens. Data in this chart is from 94 specimens, with 4 strain measurements per specimen (6 specimens were damaged during testing and therefore were excluded). Sample sizes reflect the number of different combinations for averaging strain measurements (e.g., given 4 strain measurements per specimen, there are 6 possible combinations when using groups of two, 4 combinations when using groups of three, etc.)
