As the leaves were rearranged according to the NMR split scale after sampling, in the case of the field experiment the values corresponding to the leaf ranks between 0 and −10 are the averages ± standard deviations of data collected from leaves of four plants, for leaf rank −11 the data is the average ± standard deviations of data collected from leaves of three plants. For leaf ranks between −15 and −12 and between 3 and 1 less than tree measurements were available for analysis
